Big Top Chautauqua presents toe tapping music under the big tent
As you walk on the gravel parking lot and look up at the big blue circus tent it is hard to believe that talents such as Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and B.B. King have played in this place in Bayfield. Walking into this blue canvas theatre the magic overtakes you. The acoustics in this 800-seat venue are breathtaking as the local talent of the Big Top Chautauqua house band, the Blue Canvas Orchestra amazes you with their talents.
Big Top Chautauqua is so very lucky to find their home at the top of Mt. Ashwabay located 3 miles south of Bayfield. This wonderful circus tent has been the venue for entertainers local, national and international. More popular possibly than the talent they bring in, are the Big Top Chautauqua house shows. Over 25 years ago Warren Nelson wrote the historical musical, “Riding the Wind,” which narrates the history of the Bayfield area. Since then, there have been 8 other house shows ranging from the Wisconsin sesquicentennial musical “30th Star” to this year’s newest program, “Old Minnesota: Song of the North Star.” Big Top Chautauqua was very fortunate to be one of the main attractions at the 2008 Minnesota State Fair.
