Wisconsin’s history comes alive

From the arrival of the Ojibwe on Madeline Island to the boom years of big lumber and commercial fishing, Wisconsin history has left its mark on the Bayfield Peninsula. Northern Wisconsin’s rich history can be enjoyed by visiting the Bayfield Historical Museum and Lake Superior history at Bayfield’s Maritime Museum or by experiencing award winning historic walking tours along the streets of Bayfield.

Historic homes, churches, a Carnegie Library, and businesses are found in the heart of the Bayfield Historic District. Many of Bayfield’s historic homes now operate as bed and breakfast inns, treating guests to the atmosphere of 19th century life in Bayfield – yet with all the modern day amentities and comforts.

A great way to see the historic buildings and hear about stories from the past is through entertaining and informative family friendly walking tours conducted by Bayfield Heritage Tours guides. Awarded one of the top tourist attractions in 2005 by the Midwest Travel Writers Association, visitors can select from a fun array of themes: “Ghosts and Legends of Old Bayfield”, “Dying To Get In” (cemetary walk), and “Lighthearted Walk Thru Old Bayfield.”
