Bayfield Winter Festival

March 5-7, 2010

Release your cabin fever at this weekend event and have fun while participating in this fundraiser for the Bayfield Area Recreation Center. Activities are scheduled all weekend long starting Friday, March 5th and continuing into the Sunday morning to provide a wide variety of choices for ways to participate in this fun winter event.

  • Friday, March 5th
  • Saturday, March 6th
    • 8:00am - 12:00pm Ice Fishing Demonstration
      Expert guide Craig Putchat will demonstrate the gear and skills to catch fish from on top of frozen Lake Superior. Gear provided for you to try out - shacks, cameras, rods and more. Head on to the lake just north of the ice road landing at the end of Washington Avenue.
    • 9:00am - 4:00pm Dogsled Rides on the Big Lake
      Ride and steer a real dogsled team for a 20 minute ride. Snow Ryder Dog Sled Adventures will be providing dogsled rides from downtown Bayfield. Ride your own sled or drive your own team of huskies. Get a $40 ticket at the Bayfield Area Recreation Center for the ride of a lifetime.
    • 9:30-4:30 Skiing at Mt. Ashwabay Recreation Area
      Downhill or cross country ski at our great community ski hill. Tubing 12:00pm-4:00pm.
    • 10:00am - 11:00am Registration for Run on Water
      Register online at www.bayfieldreccenter.com or at the Bayfield Lakeside Pavilion
    • 11:00am Run on Water
      This family fun event is open to people of all ages and skill levels. Participants can choose to run, walk, ski, snowshoe, skate or even bike the 5-mile course across frozen Lake Superior from Bayfield to Madeline Island and back. Snowshoe and ski rentals available. If there is no ice road this event will be cancelled. Download a registration form (pdf).
    • 11:00am - 1:00pm Jewelry Making at Water Music Jewelry & Art
      Drop by 13 South Second Street and make your own glass necklace. Only $6 for materials. Kids welcome.
    • 11:00am-4:00pm Art Show on Madeline Island
      Cross the ice road to Madeline Island and browse works of local artists at the La Pointe Center Art Guild & Gallery. Call 747-2801 for details.
    • 11:00am - 4:00pm Kiteboards on the Lake
      Watch boarders and skiers fly across the lake using massive kites. You can even take a basic lesson and try it yourself on the ice off the Broad Street beach.
    • 12:00am - 3:00pm Hand Massages and Parrafin Treatments
      Enso Wellness Center & Day Spa will be offering FREE hand massages and $5 Parrafin treatments at the Bayfield Lakeside Pavilion. Stop by and learn about the incredible massage and spa services at Enso!
    • 12:00pm - 3:00pm Softball on Ice
      Watch teams play on the lake east of downtown Bayfield, or bring your glove to join in the game.
    • 1:00pm - 3:00pm - Manypenny Madness Carnival
      Skating, broomball, penguin egg hunt in the pool, kid activities and use of the Bayfield Area Recreation Center. FREE!
    • 1:30pm - Human-Powered Dogsled Races
      Teams of 5 will pull dogsleds for a chance to win prizes. Last minute entries accepted, next to the Bayfield Area Recreation Center.
    • 2:30pm - 4:00pm CORE Senior Social at the The Bayfield Inn
      Watch the plunge from the warmth and safety of The Bayfield Inn, sponsored by CORE.
    • 3:00pm Polar Bear Plunge
      Watch brave volunteers parade then jump into frigid Lake Superior through a hole in the ice to raise money for the Bayfield Area Recreation Center. Judge the plunges and the costumes. Better yet, do it yourself! Pledge forms are available at the Bayfield Area Recreation Center or register online at www.bayfieldreccenter.com. Check out videos of previous year's plunges at:

    • 5:00pm - 10:30pm Mt. Ashwabay Winter Festival Bash
      Finish off the day with a chili tasting, tubing, live music, food, adult beverages and a bonfire at the Mt. Ashwabay Recreation Area. Sample chili from the area's best restaurants, ride the tubing hill and rock to Corey Carlson inside the tent. Free Bay Area Rural Transit (BART) buses will be running to/from downtown Bayfield 4:00pm-11:00pm. $10 wristband for anyone 6 and older. Wear your season pass and get in for free.
  • Sunday, March 7th
    • 8:00am - 12:00pm Breakfast at the Bayfront Inn/Pier Plaza
      Head to the Pier Plaza for this special, a la carte breakfast with proceeds going towards the Bayfield Area Recreation Center. All patrons will receive coupons for the Pier's upcoming "March Madness."
    • 9:30am-4:30pm Skiing at Mt. Ashwabay Recreation Area
      Downhill or cross country ski at our great community ski hill. Tubing 12:00pm-4:00pm.
    • 10:00am - 2:00pm Dogsled Rides on the Big Lake
      Ride and steer a real dogsled team for a 20 minute ride. Snow Ryder Dog Sled Adventures will be providing dogsled rides from downtown Bayfield. Ride your own sled or drive your own team of huskies. Get a $20-$40 ticket (depending on length of ride) at the Bayfield Area Recreation Center for the ride of a lifetime.
    • 11:00am Ice Bike Dash for Cold Hard Cash
      Ride your bike on an obstacle course on the ice and win cash prizes (frozen in an ice block).
    • 11:00am - 1:00am Jewelry Making at Water Music Jewelry & Art
