Experience spectacular formations of ice amongst the Apostle Islands
|
The hike along the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore ice caves is an experience of a lifetime. When conditions permit, visitors can walk, snowshoe, or ski across frozen Lake Superior and witness firsthand magical ice covered cliffs and intriguing ice formations. If weather conditions cooperate, they will soon be accessible over ice. Currently, visitors can hike along the beach or explore the Lakeshore Trail above the caves.

Cure your cabin fever in Bayfield

When March arrives, Bayfield folks are ready to get a little crazy and have some outdoor fun! From running, golfing, broomball and dog sledding on frozen Lake Superior, to hiking, skiing and tubing on snow, there are outdoor activities for all ages. The annual Bayfield Winter Festival, March 4th-6th, 2011, features a Polar Bear Plunge, the Run on Water, Mt. Ashwabay's Winterfest Bash and more.
- Run on Water - Saturday, March 5th at 11:00am. Race to Madeline Island and back on the ice road (4.5 miles). Choose your own course (it's hard to get lost...). All non-motorized methods of transportation are allowed - run, walk, snowshoe, skate, ski, bike, skijor... Awards to the top three finishers in each category. - Polar Bear Plunge - Saturday, March 5th at 3:00pm. Watch brave volunteers jump into frigid Lake Superior through a hole in the ice to raise money for the Bayfield Area Recreation Center. Judge the plunges and the costumes. Better yet, do it yourself! Find registration information online at bayfieldwinterfestival.com.
- Mt. Ashwabay Winterfest Bash - Saturday, March 5th at 5:00pm. Finish off the day with night tubing and skiing, live music, food, drinks and a bonfire at the Mt. Ashwabay Recreation Area. Visit the Mt. Ashwabay Recreation Area website for ski hill information.

For the adventurous traveler, transportation to Madeline Island is always a fun experience during the winter months. At this time, visitors can ride the windsled between Bayfield and Madeline Island, but soon may be able to drive vehicles across the famous Ice Road to La Pointe.
Visitors can view a current windsled schedule on the Bayfield Winter Recreation Report or call (715) 747-5400, 24 hours a day.
