Spring Activities Abound in Bayfield Visitors will enjoy Garden Tours, Orchard Shops, Cruises and more
As the bright yellow glow of daffodils has given way to the pink and purple hues of roadside lupine, visitors to Bayfield will delight in an ever-growing itinerary of activities. Bayfield in Bloom continues with the annual Bayfield Garden Tours on Saturday, June 5th, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. This year five homeowners will be opening their exceptionally maintained gardens and grounds to visitors and locals alike, and sharing their best horticultural tips. Come to gather landscape and design ideas or just enjoy an early summer morning amongst the picturesque outdoor beauty of Bayfield. Pick up your map for these free, self-guided tours at the Bayfield Chamber and Visitor Bureau, 42 South Broad Street, or download a map online. While in town, don't overlook the verdant orchard and berry country of Bayfield, which is alive with apple blossoms and anticipation of the upcoming bounty of strawberry crops, expected to begin ripening the middle of June. Pick up an orchard map at the Bayfield Chamber Visitor Center or online, and drive 5 minutes west of town. While you meander through the breathtaking scenery, stop at some of the family-owned and operated farm stores and browse the supply of plants, decorative garden items, unique gifts, and locally-made jams, jellies, honey, cider, and wine. If you are looking to leave your land-legs behind, Bayfield puts all the beauty and adventure of Lake Superior right outside your doorstep. This year, thanks to the gentle hand of Mother Nature, Bayfield's water activities are enjoying an early start to the summer season. Brush up on your knowledge of Apostle Islands history on a tour with the Apostle Islands Cruise Service, or enjoy a hands-on sailing experience with one of Bayfield's sailboat captains. Bayfield offers opportunity for kayaking, fishing, swimming, scuba-diving, and recreational boating, living up to it's reputation as the "Gateway to the Apostle Islands." Mark "Madeline Island Day" on your calendar for an economical trip to this popular destination, featuring "reduced passenger fare" Ferry day, "Visitor Appreciation Day," at the Madeline Island Historical Museum ($2 admission special), and free admission to Big Bay State Park. Visitors to Bayfield should bring along a camera for the chance to win 1st, 2nd and 3rd place monetary prizes in the categories of People, Business, and Scenery, as part of the 4th Annual Bayfield Photography Contest. The Bayfield Chamber is seeking images of the Bayfield area, reflecting the people, beauty and serenity of this special place. Contest rules are available at the chamber or online at www.bayfield.org.
