Bayfield declared Greenest Community in Wisconsin

With more Travel Green certified businesses than any other community in Wiscosnin, Bayfield takes pride in its sustainable practices.

On Monday, May 11th, the Bayfield community welcomed Wisconsin Secretary of Tourism Kelli Trumble for a special declaration naming Bayfield the "Greenest Community in Wisconsin." This event included a proclamation read by Bayfield Mayor Larry MacDonald and Bayfield Town Chair Tom Gordon. In addition, Secretary Trumble presented the Bayfield community with a special commendation from Governor Jim Doyle.

Resolving to become Eco-municipalities in 2006 was one of the first steps to become a more sustainable and global-climate friendly community. In 2004 both the city and town of Bayfield worked with the Pike's Bay Sanitary Disctrict to build a state of the art Wastewater Treatment Facility with zero percent discharge into Lake Superior. In 2008 the city of Bayfield adopted Governor Doyle's "25 by 25" resolution to generate 25% of Bayfield's electricity and 25% of Bayfield's transportation fuels from renewable resources by 2025.

In addtition to embracing many other environmentally-conscious and sustainable practices, the Bayfield Chamber and Visitor Bureau has set support of Travel Green Wisconsin as one of their primary goals. The Bayfield community is home to more Travel Green certified businesses than any other community in the state of Wisconsin. The Bayfield Chamber and Visitor Bureau also hosted the area's first Chequamegon Bay Energy and Environmental Fair on May 14th. This event was a great success with over 30 vendors and exhibitors present at the Bayfield Pavilion to share their knowledge and expertise on sustainable practices.

The Bayfield Chamber has set a goal to double the number of Travel Green Certified businesses by the end of 2009. Businesses who are interested in learning more about the Travel Green Wisconsin program should visit www.travelgreenwisconsin.com.
