Bayfield receives tourism joint effort marketing grant BAYFIELD, Wis. (June 27, 2011) - Department of Tourism representatives presented a $29,670 Joint Effort Marketing (JEM) grant to promote Bayfield and Madeline Island last Thursday evening at the Bayfield Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Bureau Afterhours. The Year-2 Destination Marketing project provides funds to advertise the area as a fall travel destination. "Bayfield and Madeline Island have much to offer travelers from its small town charm and eco-tourism vibe to its spectacular culinary, arts and outdoor recreational experiences," Secretary Klett said. "Tourism is a significant part of the local economy in this region and this multi-year project produces a solid return on investment by helping our tourism partners develop a solid research-based marketing strategy." Data collected during the first year of the project revealed that tourists spent nearly $9.5 million in September and October 2010. The goal of the second year project is to welcome an additional 1,275 visitors. To achieve this goal, tourism officials will rely on Internet marketing, social media, contests, mid-week discounts for visitors, and radio advertising. "There is no more beautiful area in the fall than Bayfield," says Bayfield Chamber & Visitor Bureau Executive Director Cari Obst. She continues, "We celebrate the fall harvest, have spectacular fall colors, warm temperatures thanks to Lake Superior, and many fun activities for everyone - these additional promotional funds will help us reach our goal in attracting visitors to enjoy it all." Destination Marketing funds are available to non-profit organizations for the promotion of at least three municipalities or communities. Two options are available for Destination Marketing grants. A development option allows the applicant to use a vendor of their choice to provide project deliverables. A second option allows an organization to use their own strategic planning research to conduct marketing campaigns.
