The 48th Annual Bayfield Festival of Arts, held July 31st and August 1st, entertained a record number of festival vendors and beautiful weather on the glassy shore of Lake Superior. Visitors to the show enjoyed live musical performances by singer Pat Surface, delicious festival food, and an extensive presentation of fine art. One of the highlights of the weekend was selecting five "Best in Show" artists, based on the impact and craftsmanship of their work. This year the awards went to:

  • Mary Jo Schmith, Potter, from St. Paul, MN
  • Emily Gray Koehler, Printmaker, from White Bear Lake, MN
  • Ted Gilmer, Leather artist, from Empire, MI
  • Nathan Lovas, Photographer, from Eden Prairie, MN
  • Todd Voss, Painter, from Hovland, MN

The winners were chosen by a team of local jurors who spent over five hours amongst the vendors analyzing their work. "We are confident in these 5 choices," commented one judge. "Their work really stands out." As part of this honor, the artists received a $100 monetary prize and free admission to next year's art festival.

Over 90 artists from throughout the Midwest attended this year's Festival of Arts. This juried arts & crafts show is held annually in Memorial Park on the scenic shores of Lake Superior in downtown Bayfield. A unique variety of mediums are featured including; pottery, painting, jewelry, fiber arts, sculpture, glass works, wood carvings, photography and more. The weekend also features a local Gallery Tour during which visitors can watch Bayfield artists perform wheel-thrown pottery techniques, and witness silver smithing, painting and weaving demonstrations.
