Bayfield chosen to host Best Practices Mission from Canada

The greenest community in Wisconsin has been selected to host a Sustainable Tourism group.

Bayfield has been selected by Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency for a 4 day mission in mid October. A group of 17 will be coming to the region on October 13th for four days to learn more about sustainable community development, sustainable tourism, Travel Green Wisconsin. The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency works to create opportunities for economic growth in Atlantic Canada by helping businesses become more competitive, innovative and productive, by working with diverse communities to develop and diversify local economies, and by championing the strengths of Atlantic Canada.

Wisconsin has developed a strong reputation for sustainable tourism through a number of initiatives including Travel Green. This group contacted the Wisconsin Department of Tourism and they recommended Bayfield as the perfect location for their studies. Bayfield's success in Travel Green, the proximity to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, and the Chequamegon Bay communities interest in sustainability all demonstrate a depth of knowledge.

Their objectives are numerous. In summary Participants will be exposed to ways to focus on maintaining the natural and cultural setting of a destination while gearing it towards tourists who want to travel and enjoy nature while being environmentally friendly.

Bayfield, Wiscosnin is located on the shores of Lake Superior surrounded by orchards and fruit farms. It is "Wisconsin's Berry Capital" as well as "the Gateway to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore". The town has earned a reputation as a colorful, charming and friendly community. Artists, sailors, fishing enthusiasts, kayakers, musicians and outdoor lovers have made this their home. Several years ago, Alan Solomon, a writer for the Chicago Tribune, spent weeks on the road in search of "The Best Little Town in the Midwest." Bayfield was his top choice.
