Are You Ready to Walk (or run) on Water?
The Annual Manypenny Madness Carnival and Run on Water
present another year of midwinter fun!
Bayfield, WI goes wild with its 4th annual Manypenny Madness Winter Carnival Weekend, featuring various events from Friday, Feb. 27 to Sunday, March 1, all of which raise money for community non-profit organizations. The weekend kicks off Friday with a New Orleans Dinner with Cajun food and live jazz at the Bayfield Pavilion from 4:30-7:00 pm to support local church youth groups. After that, spectators can head to the Bayfield Area Recreation Center to watch the Bellyflop and Cannonball Contest as part of the Master's Swim Meet at 7:00 pm.
Saturday, Feb. 28 starts with the Run On Water, a chance to run 4 miles across Lake Superior from Bayfield to Madeline Island and back on the famous ice road. The Manypenny Madness Winter Carnival from 1:00-3:30 has lots of fun family activities - sledding on the streets, broomball, ice skating, Bayfield Fire department ice rescue demonstrations, free swimming in the Rec Center pool, kites on ice, and a human powered dogsled race. Spectators always love watching the Polar Bear Plunge at 3:30, where more than 50 people will jump through a hole in the ice to raise money for the Rec Center. Costumes, a parade and the plunger's faces make this a highly entertaining event. Maggie's Restaurant will offer a celebratory pizza buffet 4-8 pm with all proceeds going to the Rec Center.
In the evening, Big Top Chautauqua hosts its 2nd Annual Madeline Island Benefit. Big Top entertainment will be warming up the Bell St. Tavern. Drive over on the ice road or take the windsled to enjoy an evening of up north merriment, food and music. Supper will be served at 5:30 pm and the music starts at 7 pm, with donations accepted at the door.
On Sunday, the Egg Toss Café offers a pajama buffet where diners wearing pajamas get $1 off their meal. For information on these activities, visit www.bayfield.org with links to the Bayfield Recreation Center and Big Top web sites, or call the Bayfield Visitor Bureau at 715-779-3335.
