And the Winners Are...

Over 100 volunteers and eager dogs this year's Apostle Islands Sled Dog Race was a huge success.

The 14th Annual Apostle Islands Sled Dog Races were a great success this year. The weather on Saturday was near perfect, but the winds picked up over night and created for a challenging day on Sunday. The high winds downed the warming tent, yet hundreds of spectators still came out to cheer on the many mushers and their dogs. Over 100 volunteers worked together again this year to make for another highly successful event.
The Bayfield Chamber & Visitor Bureau is proud to have hosted over 30 "voluntourists" who came to Bayfield for a volunteering vacation. Tim Parsons from Kandiyoki, MN said, "The breakfasts were a perfect way to start each day. It was nice to have everything taken care of, the room, the meals ahead of time. It made it a no-stress weekend."

The results for all four categories were as follows:
8 Dog-80 Mile Race:
First Place: Truman Obermeyer from Calumet, MI, 7:17:45
Second Place (TIE): Jerry Trudell from Calumet, MI 7:49:19
Second Place (TIE): Mark Levitski from Bryant, WI 7:49:19
6 Dog-60 Mile Race:
First Place: Dawn Breedlove from Bryant, WI 5:32:40
Second Place: Greg Johnson from Bryant, WI 5:41:41
Third Place: David Gill from Skandia, MI 6:11:24
Sportsman's Race (40 miles):
First Place: Susan Serafini from Hancock, MI 4:46:03
Second Place: Kate Larsen from Hancock, MI 5:05:32
Third Place: Amanda Meyer from Ashland, WI 5:06:03

This year there were eleven participants in the Family/Recreational Race. The ages of these mushers ranged from 8 year-old Sierra Braun from Stratford, WI to 16-year old Emily Meyer from Ashland, WI. Placing first this year was Josh Schlosser from Westboro, WI with a time of 35:07. Second place went to Josh's brother Dakota Schlosser with a time of 36:40. Our third place winner in this 7 mile race was Jake Quayle from Champion, MI with a time of 37:20.

Every year one musher is honored with the Silk Purse Award. This award is given to the musher who improved their racing performance mainly through working with the dogs they currently have, rather than buying or breeding faster dogs. The winner this year was Jim Methven of Mason, WI. He was the proud winner of a coat from Wolfsong Wear in Bayfield.
