A Working Vacation?
Bayfield Visitors have shown they want to "do good" while having fun - Volunteering!
Every year the Bayfield Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Bureau recruits over 100 volunteers to assist with the Annual Apostle Islands Sled Dog Race, and this year is no exception. The term "voluntourism" is one that many haven't heard. Tourists are taking vacations and working at the same time. "Doing good" is something people are looking to do for fun now. This year there will be about a dozen volunteers taking their winter vacations in Bayfield, and working at the Sled Dog races. These "voluntourists" will be treated to an experience of a lifetime, helping Bayfield and the surrounding communities with one of the largest sled dog races in the country.
The voluntourism package includes two or three nights lodging, 4 meals, and time helping out at the races. Each visitor has the option to stay at one of several different participating lodging facilities.
The races this year include an 80-mile race for 8-dog teams and a 60-mile race for 6 dog teams. There will also be a 40-mile Sportsman race and a Family race for the younger racers. Each year nearly 100 teams participate in this event. The races begin and end at the Town of Bayfield Gravel pit located about 12 miles from Bayfield off of highway 13. Race programs will be available at both the Bayfield Chamber office and the Race start. Races begin at 10am on Saturday and Sunday, and one of the race planners, John Thiel says, "Don't miss the start."
