Beauty of the Lake Superior Ice Caves at its peak

NOW is the time to visit the Bayfield Peninsula to see the spectacular dazzling shoreline ice caves. Lakeshore cliffs form a crimson border to this arctic landscape with pillars of ice extending to the cliff tops where waterfalls have hardened into place. Inside the caves is a fairyland of needle-like icicles. The formations change from chamber to chamber and from day to day.

The ice caves are approximately 15 miles west of Bayfield off State Highway 13. Current Lake ice conditions allow access to the mainland sea caves near Meyers Beach where you can park your vehicle and access the caves. Be prepared for a hefty one mile hike to the caves along the shoreline. This hike requires good sound boots and demands caution as the ice is very rough in some areas, smooth and slippery in others. Pets must be kept on a leash. Be sure to bring your cameras!

The Lake Superior ice road to Madeline Island is open for visitors!

Follow the ice road from Bayfield to the historic village of La Pointe and take the town road to Big Bay State Park for picturesque 5km of bushwhacking trails with spectacular icy views. The road is open and in good driving condition for vehicle traffic between Bayfield and Madeline Island.

Come discover Madeline Island in the winter and enjoy the beauty of the area. The 2.2 mile road across Lake Superior is open for business...your business!
