It's an action packed weekend February 1, 2 & 3, 2008 and one you will never forget! The Apostle Islands Sled Dog Race, Bayfield Wisconsin, invites you to experience the Midwest's largest and most exciting sled dog race as a participating volunteer. Over 100 sled dog teams come to Bayfield to compete in this top sled dog event. You can pick your spot as a volunteer - handle dogs by helping mushers hook up their teams or help bring teams up to the starting chute. Or if you choose, assist at "check points" communicating via radio on teams' progress, guide teams to stay on the trail or help enter times.

Select a wonderful vacation package that combines the excitement of the sled dogs and the competitiveness of the mushers with evenings filled with restful nights, magical snowfalls and night skies, and warm firesides.

This fantastic voluntourism package (for two) includes the following:

    A Bayfield Blue Moon Ball you won't want to miss Feb 9

    Have you ever found yourself cleaning out the attic, running into that ancient prom dress, and thinking to yourself, "If I could only wear this one more time?" Well, now you can at this year's Blue Moon Ball on February 9, from 7 to 11PM.

    This isn't just any old ball. It's a black tie (or vintage) affair for adults with dancing and great entertainment! Trophies are awarded to winners of six different categories.

    Bring your Valentine and dance to the sweet sounds of the Big Woods Band, an 18-piece group that performs at the Blue Moon Ball every year. Tickets are available at the Bayfield Chamber & Visitor Bureau for $20 in advance. They may also be purchased at the event for $25.

    Downhill Skiiing

    Mt. Ashwabay provides great family skiing in Bayfield

    Located three miles south of Bayfield, Mt. Ashwabay offers both cross country and alpine skiing in a magnificent setting which features stunning views of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and the Chequamegon National Forest.

    Cross country trails cover 35 km of wilderness with ratings from beginner to expert. All trails are groomed and tracked as needed.

    The beginner's trail is the picturesque Sugar Bush Trail. Intermediate terrain can be enjoyed on Anchor, Seagull and Raven trails. Advanced skiers can venture out on the longer 15 km loop which combines Sugar Bush, Deer Path and Raven trails, returning to the Mt. Ashwabay chalet. The Anchor and Seagulls are being groomed for skating as well. Showshoes are welcome on the sides of the cross country trails. The 14 alpine runs range from beginner to expert and are accessed from a T-bar and four tow ropes which are also open to cross country and telemarkers.

    Wolfsong Adventures will make your dog sled adventure one you won't forget!

    At Wolfsong, the owners are the guides. Bayfield residents John and Mary Thiel are seasoned outdoor adventurers who have mushed thousands of miles and trained hundreds of mushers. They know that small group sizes, well trained, happy dogs, and good trails are the key components of a great mushing program.

    13th Annual Apostle Islands Sled Dog Race set for Feb 1-3

    Over 100 sled dog teams are expected to run in the 13th Annual Apostle Islands Sled Dog Race on Saturday and Sunday, February 2 & 3, 2008. Races begin at 10AM both Saturday and Sunday with half of the total race distance completed each day. There are two main races: an 8 dog, 80-mile race and a 6 dog, 60-mile race. A 40-mile Sportsman's Race and a 16 and under Family Race will also be held over the weekend.

    Pre-race activities begin at 6PM in the Lakeside Pavilion on Friday, February 1 with a "Meet the Mushers" spaghetti dinner that is open to the public. A pre-race musher's meeting will follow with bib numbers assigned and instructions from race officials handed out.

    Sled Dogs

    The start and finish line is located 15 miles north of downtown Bayfield at the Echo Valley Gravel Pit on Hwy. 13. Programs with a map of the course are available at the Bayfield Visitor's Center or at www.bayfield.org. At the start and finish location, are restrooms and concessions along with a bonfire to keep spectators warm.

    'Run on Water' combines with Manypenny Madness

    The 2008 'Run on Water' will be part of Bayfield's Winter Festival, Manypenny Madness,Saturday, March 1st. Run on Water

    Release your cabin fever at this all day event and have fun while participating in this fundraiser for the Bayfield Recreation Center. Activities are scheduled all day long starting early and continuing into the evening to provide a wide variety of choices for ways to participate in this fun winter event.

  • 10am - Run on Water
    This family fun event is open to people of all ages and skill levels. Participants can choose to run, walk, ski, or snowshoe the 5-mile course across frozen Lake Superior from Bayfield to Madeline Island and back. Registration: 10:00 am at Lakeside Pavilion Fees: $15 per person; $10 age 10 & under
  • 1:00-3:30pm - Madness Carnival
    Sledding down Manypenny Ave., skating, broomball, snow sculptures, indoor games, arts & crafts, swimming in the indoor pool, concessions and more! Activities will take place at and around the Bayfield Recreation Center.
  • 3:30pm - Polar Bear Plunge
    Broad Street Beach - Watch brave volunteers jump into Lake Superior to raise money for the Bayfield Recreation Center. Judge the plunges and the costumes. Better yet, do it yourself! Free soak in the hot tub afterwards for all plungers.
  • 4-8pm - Maggie's Pizza Buffet
    $12 All-you-can-eat - proceeds go to the Bayfield Recreation Center
  • 7am-Noon on Sunday March 2nd - Breakfast Buffet at the Egg Toss
