Winter sports and activities
From snowshoeing and dog sledding to snowmobiling and cross-country skiing, Bayfield offers a flurry of fun activities for winter sports enthusiasts.
When the snow falls, the landscape is transformed into a wonderland of winter splendor. The famous sea caves become magical sparkling cathedrals of ice, creating a popular destination for hikers. Even those who prefer not to get out into the elements can admire the dramatic ice formations on the lake from the comfort of their cars on a drive along the shoreline.
Snowshoers will discover more than 100 miles of snowshoe trails and skiers will find 130 miles of groomed cross country ski trails. Some of the best can be found at nearby Mt. Ashwabay, which has become an area favorite for these activities. You can also find challenging snowboarding and alpine skiing at Mt. Ashwabay, where 13 runs and a chairlift await.
With rare exception, Lake Superior freezes deep enough to allow us to fashion our famous "Ice Road", allowing you to drive, hike or ski back and forth to Madeline Island. Ice fishing hotspots also lie right at our doorstep.
Up for a real backcountry experience? Join a guided dog sledding expedition to experience the snowy solitude of the surrounding landscape. Or take a brisk hike or walk along one of the many area trails through the woods, made even more tranquil by the stillness of the season.
Winter in Bayfield offers an idyllic setting for snowy fun and adventure!
