Our Voluntourism Packages combine the excitement of handling the sled dogs and the thrill of the starting chute with restful nights and warm firesides. We will arrange lodging, with your choice of a local hotel, condo or B&B. Meals and tickets for all of the weekend’s special events are also included. On race days you will have the chance to be right in the action or help from the sidelines. There is no better way to be a part of this remarkable event. Individuals and groups welcome.

Q: How do I sign up as a Voluntourist?
A: In order to reserve your package, please complete a Voluntourism Reservation Form and submit it to the Bayfield Chamber & Visitor Bureau. Call (715) 779-3335 or email firstname.lastname@example.org with questions. Packets with tickets and all lodging details will be mailed out in January.
Q: Where do the Voluntourists stay?
A: Lodging will be assigned based upon what you specify. You may stay at an Inn or Motel, a Bed & Breakfast, or a suite/condo (if you wish to have kitchen facilities). Once payment is received, the Chamber will assign lodging based upon which of our lodging members are participating in this special package.
Q: When is the 2019 race?
A: The upcoming Apostle Islands Sled Dog Race is Saturday and Sunday, February 2 and 3, 2019.
Q: Where is the race start located?
A: The race start is located approximately 12 miles north of downtown Bayfield at the Echo Valley gravel pit on Highway 13. There are concessions, portable restrooms and a bonfire to keep spectators warm at this location. There is a spectator location staffed with volunteers, bonfires and portable restrooms designated on the race map. The race trail itself follows the Sand River trail system of Bayfield County.
Q: Are local businesses open during the winter?
A: Many businesses are open in Bayfield as well as along Highway 13 and in neighboring communities of Washburn and Cornucopia. View the Retail & Dining Hours brochure.

Friday, February 1: Meet the Mushers Lasagna Dinner & Check-in, Bayfield Lakeside Pavilion, 6-8pm
Saturday, February 2: Races begin at Echo Valley, 10am (arrive at 9am for volunteer train-in)

Q: What are the hours I have to work as a Voluntourist?
A: You may work as many hours as you wish on Saturday and Sunday, or only one day if you wish. The Volunteer Form in the Voluntourism Reservation Packet lists the areas of interest with options for your available days and hours.
Q: Do I need to have any experience to participate as a Voluntourist?
A: No. We have seasoned volunteers who will train you in several positions. If you like dogs, you’ll love being a dog handler! If you’d like a more low-key volunteer duty, we’ve got those, too.
