Slumberland Birkie® Explore Bayfield
What won’t you find? You won’t find a single fast-food restaurant or national chain, long lines or a friendly smile that isn’t the real deal and not a single stop light. Maybe that’s why the Chicago Tribune ranked Bayfield as the “Best Little Town in the Midwest.”
Outdoor adventures are also plentiful and a true wilderness experience can be had just a few miles offshore within the boundaries of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Made up of 21 islands and 12 miles of mainland, which include some of the famous sea caves, visitors can hike, camp and boat amongst these pristine landscapes. Sailboat and powerboat charters are available to transport visitors to the islands, or take a narrated cruise to get an overview of history and culture of these spectacular landforms.
Hiking and biking options are available on the mainland as well, with well maintained trails that will suit any level of expertise. Please visit Bayfield Area Trails for local trail information.

Q: What is there to do in Bayfield & the Apostle Islands this time of year?
A: Outdoor recreation is the name of the game! You already know about Bayfield’s great Nordic trails. So discover frozen waterfalls, go dogsledding, take a winter hike with island views, or snowshoe in fresh snow–enjoy the outdoors.
Q: How do I get to Madeline Island?
A: The ice has formed between the mainland and Madeline Island, but it is not thick enough for an ice road. Transportation between Bayfield and Madeline Island is being provided by Windsleds Transportation, Inc. Call 715-747-5400 (recorded message) for crossing information or click for the schedule.
Q: Are the Ice Caves open?
A: Hike the Lakeshore Trail, on the land above the caves. There is currently open water and/or unsafe ice surrounding the caves themselves, making them inaccessible.
