Located in far northern Wisconsin, on the shores of beautiful Lake Superior, Bayfield is is the gateway to the Apostle Islands. Surrounded by the berry farms and orchards of the Fruit Loop, Bayfield is also known as the Berry Capital of Wisconsin.
Whether you are coming to explore our historic downtown, shop in our galleries or retail shops or take a trip to view the lighthouses of the Apostle Islands, you have found the perfect getaway.
There’s a reason people frequently remark that Bayfield feels so real and genuine. It is. You can still find a candy store where handmade chocolates, pastries and other treats take form before your very eyes. Watch as local artists create their wares at their studio and galleries. Ask them a question! They will be happy to share their technique with you. Or just spend some time relaxing in one of our many lakefront parks, watching the sailboats glide by as ferry makes its way back and forth to Madeline Island.
What won’t you find? You won’t find a single fast-food restaurant or national chain, long lines or a friendly smile that isn’t the real deal and not a single stop light. Maybe that’s why the Chicago Tribune ranked Bayfield as the “Best Little Town in the Midwest.”
Outdoor adventures are also plentiful and a true wilderness experience can be had just a few miles offshore within the boundaries of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Made up of 21 islands and 12 miles of mainland, which include some of the famous sea caves, visitors can hike, camp and boat amongst these pristine landscapes. Sailboat and powerboat charters are available to transport visitors to the islands, or take a narrated cruise to get an overview of history and culture of these spectacular landforms.
Hiking and biking options are available on the mainland as well, with well maintained trails that will suit any level of expertise. Please visit Bayfield Area Trails for local trail information.
