Bayfield and the Apostle Islands has a continental climate with warm to cool summers and very cold winters. Thanks to Lake Superior, the most reliable characteristic of Bayfield’s weather is its unpredictability. Typically areas along the lake are cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Be prepared and check the current conditions and forecast before you arrive.

SPRING (APRIL – JUNE)

During springtime in the Apostle Islands area, you might be enjoying near summertime temperatures during the day while a good amount of snow lingers on the ground. Skiing in early May is not out of the question. June is very pleasant. The average high temperature at this time of year is 63°F.

SUMMER (JULY – SEPTEMBER)

Bayfield enjoys warm, sunny summers, but cool temperatures are not uncommon. You may find much cooler temperatures near Lake Superior. July is the warmest month, with average highs of 79°F.

FALL (OCTOBER – DECEMBER)

Autumn in Bayfield and the Apostle Islands sees cool mornings and evenings. Expect hard frosts on the ground in the morning and leaves start to fall. Peak fall colors usually arrive the second week of October, with snow coming hard and early thanks to the effects of Lake Superior making us a great location to enjoy winter sports earlier. October highs average 57°F, while December highs average 25°F.

WINTER (JANUARY – MARCH)

Bayfield receives large amounts of beautiful snow. January is the coldest month, with an average low of 0°F, but the thermometer can drop into the minus thirties. Lake effect snow tends to be light and fluffy. Heavy, wet snow is very common.
